Schimel Campaign Statement on Sexual Assault Kit Initiative

September 10, 2018 | Press Release

[WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis…] – Earlier today, Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel announced a major milestone in the state’s efforts to address an accumulation of previously untested sexual assault kits that spans multiple decades. All sexual assault kits that were designated for testing have been tested and follow up investigative work is now underway, bringing justice to sexual assault survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. Wisconsin’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (WiSAKI) has been Brad Schimel’s priority since he took office in January 2015, and without Schimel’s leadership, these sexual assault kits would not have been tested. In reaction to the inexperienced Josh Kaul’s political showboating in the wake of this achievement, Brad Schimel’s campaign manager, Johnny Koremenos, released the following statement.

“It takes some nerve for a guy with as little experience as Josh Kaul, who has never prosecuted a single case in Wisconsin, to criticize the accomplishments of a 30-year Wisconsin prosecutor. Brad Schimel is the reason this decades-old problem has been resolved. No previous attorneys general got the job done. If it wasn’t for Brad Schimel, thousands of sexual assault kits would be sitting on shelves in law enforcement agencies and hospitals across the state. The sexual assault kit initiative is just the latest example where Josh Kaul’s inexperience is on full display. Kaul has never prosecuted a single criminal case in Wisconsin. Not one, ever. He is quick with the political potshot, but partisan activism doesn’t make Wisconsin safer. That’s why members of his own party have chosen to support Brad Schimel.”
